Dharmapala Palden Lhamo or Panden Lhamo is known as “Glorious Goddess” is a terrifying female protector of Buddhism. According to Hinduism, She is known as Shridevi which means “Great Lady.” Sometimes she is regarded as a wrathful emanation of Saraswati (Goddess of Hinduism). Among eight guardians of Dharmapala, Palden Lhamo is the only female Goddess protecting Buddhism. She is a wrathful deity recognize as the goddess to protect Buddhism in Tibet.
Dharmapala Palden Lhamo is one popular Buddhism goddess who appears in the retinue of the protection from various obstacles Mahakala describing her as the “tutelary deity of Tibet and its Protectors.”
Through various Buddhist, she is known as Magzor Gyamlo and Remati. Palden Lhamo has an interesting story about how she became one protector of Buddhism. Palden Lhamo is named Remati during the time she married Yama (Shinje)– King of Lanka who ruled over the Dudpos. She promised to convert his husband to Buddhism or else when would end his dynasty. With lots of efforts, she was failed to stop him from killing Dharma practitioners and also failed to stop their son. In end, they made no choice therefore, she slaughtered her son who was raised to kill Buddhist when her husband went for hunting.
She ate her own son’s flesh, drank his blood with his skull as Kapala or cup and flayed his skin to become a saddle and escaped towards the north. When King found out about his son murdered, he was enraged. He shot the rump of the mule that Remati was riding. Remati Healed the would and transformed it into an eye stating. She is believed to travel to Tibet than China then Mongolia and finally settled down on the mountain Oikhan in eastern Siberia.
Some other myths explain that when she was dead, she was reborn in hell and fought her way to get out from the hell. She steals a bag of diseases and sword and escaped from channel grounds. She could not found herself on peace therefore, she prayed to the Buddha for a reason to live. Lord Gautam Buddha appeared and requested her to protect the dharma and she agreed, therefore, Remati becomes a Palden Lhamo as a protector of Dharma.

Since she is known as a wrathful deity considered as Dharmapala, she has a terrifying appearance. She has known as an appearance with lion-headed Dharmapala Simhamukha behind her. She has three eyes one on her forehead and holds a skull cup and a flaming sword. She rides on a white mule. Surrounding her there are four goddesses of the season and five sisters of long life and 12 Tenma Goddesses.
