Buddha Jayanti is also popularly known as Buddha Purnima is the festival is celebrated during the first month (Baisakh) of full moon day Lunar calendar (Lies on May).


This day is an important day for Buddhism followers and Newar Buddhism in the Kathmandu valley. During the day people worship the main deity of Buddhism Lord Gautam Buddha as the day marks three important events taken place i.e. his life- the birth date, the enlightenment, and his achievement of Nirvana.

Buddha Jayanti Festival

Buddha Jayanti festival is an important festival for Nepal especially Buddhist Religion followers and Newar Buddhism celebrated with great devotion traveling to Buddhist temples and Stupas and offer their prayers. Also, many Hinduism followers of Nepal visit stupa and temple and offer prayers during the day.

Buddha Jayanti Festival is celebrated on the full moon day of Baisakh (First Month of Nepal Calendar) according to the Lunar calendar that lies in May. During 2019 AD, the festival was celebrated on 4th, Jestha (18th, May); this year’s festival is celebrated on 25th Baisakh(7th May 2020), and next year the festival will be celebrated on 26th May 2021.

Why People Celebrate Buddha Jayanti (Buddha Purnima)?

As a Buddhism Followers, this day is the major festival to celebrate showing the special significance has taken place in the life of Lord Gautam Buddha (Siddhartha Gautam)

The major three events took place during Buddha Purnima on the life of Lord Gautam Buddha for the reason people celebrate Buddha Jayanti are

  1. The day Lord Siddhartha Gautam Born.
  2. The day Lord Siddhartha Gautam attained enlightenment and become Buddha ( Awaken Ones).
  3. The day Lord Siddhartha Gautam Attained Parinirvana (Nirvana-after-death of the body).

Buddha Jayanti in 2020

In 2020, people celebrate Buddha Jayanti (Buddha Purnima) on 7th May. According to Bikram Sambat, the day lies in 25th Baisakh, 2077 B.S. During this day, People travel to Buddhist temples and offer prayers. There will be chanting, prayers, and music that make devotees calm and peace during traveling to the temple.


Since the world is suffering from infectious disease name “Coronavirus (COVID-19)“, It is prohibited to go out of the house, and therefore, people start to celebrate this day at home and pray for the welfare of the world.

Buddha Jayanti 2020 in Nepal

People celebrate Buddha Jayanti in Nepal dated 25th Baisakh 2077 B.S. this year. During this day, many devotees travel to Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, and Lumbini (Birth Place of Lord Gautam Buddha) and offer their prayers.


Since Nepal is also affected by Coronvirus (COVID-19), devotees are not allowed to go out temple or stupa to offer their prayers. Therefore, this year we worship Lord Gautam Buddha at home in the puja room. We offer fruits, rice, and other useful items hoping for the welfare of the world, nation, and family.
